The Ripple Effect

When people fall victim to a counterfeit check fraud scheme, they will be conned into giving their personal information to a criminal, usually found online offering some sort of employment opportunity. They are then instructed to accept a check and to have it deposited into their checking account or an account they have been instructed to open for the purpose of depositing funds. The victims are then told to wire a large portion of the funds, usually ninety to ninety-five percent of the funds to an account within the U.S., Canada, London, Ghana, Nigeria or somewhere in the Russian Federation. So who are the victims? Notice there is more than one. They are the needy and unsuspecting customer or senior citizen that fall for the scam and ultimately negatively impacting the bank.

 

Only in rare occasions does the customer have the resources to re-pay the amount of money wired, which usually is in the three to five-thousand dollar range. So ultimately the bank is also a victim. But wait, it does not stop there. What if this money went to fund a terrorist plot against U.S. citizens abroad or somehow comes back into the U.S. to fund a domestic terrorist plot here? What impact would we have on the bank, on the customer, and on the use of the stolen funds if we could stop the crime and prevent the loss? What goodwill message would be spread by the bank if they could protect their customers before this insidious crime took place? The positive ripple effect would be enormous. Workplace Violence

According to the latest U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 70% of workplace homicides were committed by robbers and other assailants while about 21% were committed by work associates between 2005 and 2009. In addition, strangers committed the greatest proportion of nonfatal workplace violence against males (53%) and females (41%) between 2005 and 2009. Among workplace homicides that occurred between 2005 and 2009, about 28% involved victims in sales and related occupations and about 17% involved victims in protective service occupations. Between 2005 and 2009, while firearms were used in 5% of nonfatal workplace violence, shootings accounted for 80% of workplace homicides.  We cited these statistics to show the frequency and gravity of incidents.
